Lesson 17 · Part 2

Lesson 17. How old are you?

Now you can count up to 10. It’s the perfect time to find out — how old are you?

The question

Koliko imaš godina? (Колико имаш година?)
— How old are you? (lit. “how many years do you have”)
Koliko imate godina? (Колико имате година?)
— How old are you? (polite)

The answer

Imam deset godina. (Имам десет година.)
— I am ten years old.
Imam devet godina. (Имам девет година.)
— I am nine years old.

The word godina means “year.” In the plural it becomes godine (years) or godina (after the number 5 and higher — this is the so‑called “genitive” form), but for now just remember the pattern:

A dialogue

— Zdravo! Kako se zoveš? (— Здраво! Како се зовеш?)
— — Hi! What's your name?
— Zovem se Petar. A ti? (— Зовем се Петар. А ти?)
— — My name is Petar. And you?
— Ja sam Ana. Koliko imaš godina? (— Ја сам Ана. Колико имаш година?)
— — I'm Ana. How old are you?
— Imam deset godina. A ti? (— Имам десет година. А ти?)
— — I'm ten. And you?
— Imam devet. (— Имам девет.)
— — I'm nine.
