Lesson 147 · Part 10

Lesson 147. Imperfect: recognition

The imperfect is an even more bookish form. It marks a long, ongoing action in the past. It has almost dropped out of use.

Sedeše i čitaše. (Седеше и читаше.)
— He was sitting and reading.
Beše noć kad stigoh. (Беше ноћ кад стигох.)
— It was night when I arrived.

Endings

-ah, -aše, -aše, -asmo, -aste, -ahu (from the present stem).

čitati → čitah, čitaše, čitaše, čitasmo, čitaste, čitahu.

At school it is enough to be able to recognize these forms.
